UTB Acquires the Closed Sappi Lanaken, Belgium Paper Mill

Following the closure of Sappi Lanaken in Belgium, UTB Industrial Acquisitions has reached an agreement with Sappi Europe to acquire 100 per cent of Sappi’s shares in Lanaken, Belgium. The transaction includes all real estate and assets.

Asset Sale
The assets include a CTMP plant and 2 paper machines both capable of producing MC and WFC paper grades from 40 to 170 gr/m2.

The first machine produces paper of 7.5m wide and has a capacity of 350,000 T/annum. This paper machine was recently fully rebuilt to the latest standards by Valmet including a new form master, top former, shoe press, inline coating, multinip calendar and reeler. The second paper machine produces paper of 4.8m wide and has a capacity of 240,000 T/annum.

At the site of Sappi Lanaken, there is also a complete CTMP plant with a capacity of 165,000 T/annum which produced pulp for Sappi’s own paper production.

Real Estate
The location has a size of over 300,000m2 and is strategically located along the Albert Canal in Belgium with a 440-metre quay wall.

UTB is now investigating the possibilities of a future industrial use of the complex in Lanaken. In the meantime, the sale of the assets including the 2 paper machines, CTMP plant and other equipment has started.
