Suzano Receives Groundbreaking International Certifications for its Kraft Lignin and Micro Fibrillated Cellulose (MFC)
The company’s bioproducts are part of the list of 100 per cent bio-based raw materials certified by the BioPreferred Programme, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Suzano, one of the world’s largest pulp producers and a global benchmark in the manufacture of bioproducts developed from eucalyptus, is the first Brazilian company to receive international sustainability certifications for its kraft lignin (Ecolig™) and its micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC). The company’s bioproducts are now part of the list of 100 per cent bio-based raw materials certified by the BioPreferred Programme, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The aim of the BioPreferred Programme is to encourage the development, purchase and use of bio-based products to reduce the use of petroleum derivatives and their environmental impacts.
In addition, Suzano’s micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC) has also just been approved as a raw material by the COSMOS/ECOCERT standard, a set of regulations and guidelines developed to ensure that cosmetic products are produced in a sustainable manner. This evaluation reinforces the safety and reliability of Suzano’s micro fibrillated cellulose for use in this segment.
Important milestone

In addition to the recently acquired certifications, the composition of Suzano’s micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC) has also been certified as a biodegradable material by the OECD 301B methodology, managed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, which helps countries develop and harmonise methods for evaluating chemical products. Ecolig® is certified by TUV Austria for its compostable composition, in both domestic and industrial environments.
The advantage of a biodegradable or compostable product is that it is easier to decompose, reducing the accumulation of waste in landfills and potential pollution, as well as collaborating with biological cycles and the circular economy.

These two bioproducts are produced in Brazil from eucalyptus grown responsibly by Suzano. Both have multiple functionalities: while the kraft lignin serves as a sustainable, high-performance alternative to chemical additives and antioxidants of fossil origin, the micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC) acts as an agent of reinforcing, retention and suppression, rheological modifier, grease and oxygen barrier and as a solution stabiliser.
