Anthony “Tony” Lyons, Ph.D., Honoured with TAPPI’s 2025 Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award
TAPPI, one of the leading associations for the pulp, paper, tissue, packaging and converting industry, is pleased to announce that Anthony “Tony” Lyons, Ph.D., TAPPI Fellow, has been named winner of the prominent Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award. The Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award recognises individuals for voluntary leadership and their support in advancing the mission and vision of TAPPI and the industry.

Dr. Lyons has made an impact on so many aspects of TAPPI. Over the course of 40 years, he has consistently worked for the betterment of the Association through his commitment to service and leadership, as well as countless technical contributions and I’m looking forward to presenting the award to him at TAPPICon.

Dr. Lyons retired from IMERYS as director of science and technology and established Paper Lyons LLC a paper and packaging technology consultancy, in 2017.
A TAPPI member since 1985, Dr. Lyons served in leadership roles including the TAPPI Board of Directors and multiple TAPPI divisions and committees. His volunteer roles include the Finishing and Converting Division and the Coating and Graphic Arts Division, where he served as Conference Chair and Division Chair for both and earned the Divisions’ Leadership and Service Awards.
He served on the steering committee for the International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials from 2005-2011. As Chair and Co-Chair of the PaperCon Steering Committee in 2011 and 2012, Dr. Lyons played an instrumental role in creating the groundwork for TAPPICon, which is the premier event for the forest products industry.
Dr. Lyons began his career at IMERYS, formerly ECCI, in 1994 as leader of ECCI’s paper technology laboratory in Sanderville, Ga. and went on to serve in various leadership roles across the organisation’s business units over the course of his 25-year tenure including coating and graphic arts, technology platforms, paper technology applications and pigments. Prior to his tenure at IMERYS, Dr. Lyons was the director of coatings and finishing research at Repap Technologies Inc. (RTI), a subsidiary of Repap Enterprise, in Valley Forge, PA and a research engineer at Westvaco Corporation’s research center in Laurel, MD. He holds patents in pigments, barrier, inkjet and agriculture.
Dr. Lyons earned a Bachelor and Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Buffalo State University and received his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University.
The award will be officially presented at TAPPICon, 4-7 May 2025 in Minneapolis, Minn., USA.
