Lucart Joins Science-based Target Initiative to Reassert its Commitment to Sharing a Sustainable Future

Lucart, a multinational paper group known for its Tenderly, Tutto Pannocarta and Lucart Professional brands, is reasserting its commitment to sustainability by joining the Science-based Target Initiative (SBTi) to develop a strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions based on the latest scientific evidence and validated by a third party.
By joining the programme, Lucart commits to setting specific reduction targets by 2026 for emissions directly controlled by the company (Scope 1), indirect emissions from the production of electricity, steam or heat (Scope 2) and indirect emissions from the company’s value chain (Scope 3). In particular, the Group has chosen to focus on identifying and developing Near-Term Reduction Targets, which are the essential starting points for defining of even more challenging climate strategies.
For us, being part of this initiative is a further step forward in the process that we are pursuing inspired by the ethical and business values that have always accompanied us. We are convinced of the importance of giving substance to a vision to contribute to the changes we all need to be a part of. The Science-based Target Initiative asks is to do something more. Rather than being guided by what is possible or convenient, our actions must be driven by what needs to be done globally according to science.

Launched in 2015 from the agreement between CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resource Institute (WRI) and the Word Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), SBTi supports companies in defining best practices and setting evidence-based targets in line with the 2015 COP21 Paris Agreement on climate warming (limiting global warming to below 2°C compared to the pre-industrial temperature levels by pledging to limit it to 1.5°C). SBTi independently assesses the targets set by companies to increase their competitive advantage in the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
In 2022, Lucart achieved and surpassed important targets, including an 11% reduction in specific CO2 emissions compared to the previous year and a 22 % reduction compared to 2014 (Scopes 1 and 2), in addition to a 19.6% reduction in specific NOX emissions and a 5.9% reduction in water used per tonne of paper produced compared to 2021. Lucart has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact Network Italy, the world’s largest Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, since 2020.
Lucart’s commitment fully responds to the company’s long-standing drive to promote a sustainable way of producing paper by focusing on a systemic approach, aimed at creating value for all stakeholders while contributing to the fight against climate change at the same time.
